Discipleship Programs

We envision Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church as a loving faith community where all are sought, welcomed nurtured and transformed to be Christ in the world. Small group participation is where individuals best experience the loving faith community where they can be welcomed, nurtured, and transformed to be Christ in the world. Small groups are offered at multiple times to maximize the percentage of persons in faith formation and fellowship. Here, too, we can bear one another's burdens and share our joys and concerns.

Children’s Sunday School

We have experienced and screened child care providers who welcome the children, birth to 3 years of age in a loving atmosphere. Nursery is available during worship services and Sunday school, as well as special events.
(1st Floor)

The children currently learn together on Sunday morning, often using seasonal curriculum that would parallel what the adults are using, so we have a cross-generational experience.  When not using these short seasonal studies, the children are involved in learning about their Bible and how it applies in their lives.

In addition to the Sunday school option, the children have ever expanding options for small group learning and service as they learn to be disciples of Jesus Christ.  Some of those options include:

M&M (Mission and Music for elementary aged children) which meetings during the school calendar 5:00 – 6:00 pm in the Children’s room.  During this time, the children spend time learning music for leadership in worship on occasion.  Music is followed by opportunities to learn about and participate in  mission and service.  There have been occasions that the children participate in special sessions on learning to use their Bible, special seasonal activities – Lent, Advent, Passover, etc.

Adult Sunday School

Adults may choose from a wide variety of Sunday morning and other evening fellowship groups. Duncan Memorial has graduated several groups in DISCIPLE Bible Study programs.  Some of the most recent evening or weekday offerings include: John, The Gospel of Light and Life; Revival: Faith as the Wesley Lived It, Set Apart, Holy Habits of Kings and Prophets, Lectionary Scripture studies, and many more.

Currently meeting on Sunday morning are adult groups which include:

Boice Class- This class, for adults of all ages, uses contemporary Christian authors to develop a deeper understanding of the Scriptures. Class discussions stimulate thinking about the relevance of Scriptures in our lives and challenge us to put Scriptures into practice. (Upstairs)

Experiencing Prayer – Each week this group practices a variety of prayers for the congregation, community and world.

Bible Discovery – Study in this class focuses on either selected passages, or themes of Scripture.

Short term Elective Options – In recent months these electives have included Forgiveness, What Every Church Member Should Know About Poverty, etc

Disciple Fast Track Bible Study – A new revision of the much loved Disciple classes for those who need shorter classes with a bit less reading.

Whether your age, learning never ends. The atmosphere is ripe for spiritual growth at Duncan Memorial. Our church is enriched by its historic ties to Randolph-Macon College and the involvement of its faculty and students.
